Gradescope Overview

What is Gradescope?

Gradescope is an optional grading tool integrated with Blackboard to improve the effectiveness and reduce the time associated with traditional grading. It helps digitally collect, organize, and store work; streamline grading workflows for paper-based exams and assignments, bubble sheet exams, online homework, and programming projects; and identify student and class trends with robust statistics and dashboards. If you’re grading student work, this tool will be helpful to you!

To learn more, view the Syracuse University Gradescope flyer and watch this short “What is Gradescope?” video:

Exams & Quizzes

Instructors administer an assessment then collect and scan student work.

Homework & Problem Sets

Instructors specify a window of time that students can submit their work. Students upload their work via phone or computer.

Bubble Sheets

Gradescope provides a bubble sheet template. Instructors create their answer keys in Gradescope, set point values with partial credit options, then collect and scan student submissions into a PDF they can drag and drop in Gradescope for which all student submissions will be automatically graded.

Programming Assignments

Instructors can automatically grade student submitted code with a custom written autograder and/or manually grade using the traditional Gradescope grading interface.

Online Assignments

Instructors create questions directly in Gradescope. Students log in and submit responses within the Gradescope interface. Gradescope will automatically grade multiple choice questions.

  • Team grading
  • Question by question grading
  • Anonymous grading
  • Rubrics (with ability to apply rubric changes to previously graded work)
  • Suggested answer grouping
  • Supports LaTeX and Markdown
  • Assignment statistics (min/max, mean, std)
  • Question tagging to track student performance and progress on particular course concepts

The most effective way to access Gradescope is directly through your Blackboard course. In Blackboard, click the Tools menu from your course page then select Gradescope Course.

An alternate method is by going to gradescope.com/saml and selecting Syracuse University from the list of institutions to sign in with your SU credentials.

Safari Users: To use Gradescope in an embedded window within Blackboard, select Preferences from Safari’s settings and then ensure Prevent cross-site tracking is unchecked.

At Syracuse University, Gradescope is integrated with Blackboard via LTI 1.3. Read the Gradescope article on “Using Gradescope with Blackboard as an Instructor” if your course is set up in Blackboard. This resource contains important information about syncing your roster, setting up assessments, and posting grades.

The “Using Gradescope with Blackboard as a Student” resource can be shared with students. It contains information about submitting assignments and viewing grades and submissions.
