The Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) are selecting a faculty fellow to act on the most recent assessment results for one of Syracuse University’s university-wide learning goals, Civic and Global Responsibility (CGR). This fellowship supports one faculty member in reviewing existing CGR data and conducting follow up focus groups with key student groups to further reflect on student learning strengths and areas of improvement. Engaging students as partners in university-wide learning outcome assessment increases student agency and is a key practice in implementing transparent teaching, learning, and assessment practices. This strategy validates students’ lived experiences as learners and provides faculty with unique perspectives to enhance learning. Following the focus groups, the fellow will help the CTLE and OIE create a faculty professional development programming.
Fellowship Goals:
- Synthesize and analyze CGR data: Review existing Civic and Global Responsibility (CGR) assessment results to identify key trends, strengths, and areas for improvement in student learning.
- Engage students as partners: Design and facilitate focus groups with key student populations to gather deeper insights into their experiences, perspectives, and interpretations of CGR learning outcomes.
- Promote transparent assessment practices: Implement strategies that increase student agency in assessment by openly sharing findings, involving students in meaning-making, and demonstrating how feedback informs instructional and institutional decisions.
- Translate findings into actionable recommendations: Develop evidence-based recommendations for faculty and programs that strengthen student learning in CGR, emphasizing pedagogical strategies and curricular enhancements.
Eligibility and Award Information:
- Any full-time faculty member at Syracuse University is eligible to apply.
- Applications will be assessed using an evaluation rubric. The highest scoring applicants will most convincingly demonstrate three things: 1.) The faculty member has an ongoing commitment to meaningful assessment of student learning and teaching effectiveness. 2.) The faculty member understands a range of teaching and learning issues specific to Civil and Global Responsibility, such as potential obstacles to student success and research-based teaching practices that are particularly relevant. 3.) The faculty member has experience with and enthusiasm for implementing the students-as-partners framework in any type of academic, classroom, or professional setting.
