Gradescope How It Works

Gradescope fits the way you already assess. Pick the assignment type that matches your exam or homework, then use the features below to grade it faster and more consistently. You still decide every grade.

Pick the assignment type that matches how you assess

Select the type closest to how you assess to see how to set it up.

Exam / Quiz

Give the exam on paper as usual, then scan the whole stack. Gradescope splits it into individual students and questions.

Best for in-class midterms and finals.

Homework / Problem Set

Set a submission window. Students upload handwritten or typed work and mark which page answers each question.

Best for weekly problem sets and take-home work.

Bubble Sheet

Print the free bubble sheet template on any printer, set your answer key with partial credit, and Gradescope scores every sheet.

Best for large multiple-choice exams.

Students submit code. Run your own autograder, grade by hand, or combine both on the same assignment.

Best for coding courses of any size.

Features that save time

FeatureWhat it does for you
Team gradingCo-instructors and TAs grade in the same assignment at the same time, each taking a question or a range of students.
Dynamic rubricsEdit a rubric item’s points or wording, and every submission already graded with it updates.
Reusable commentsWrite a comment once and apply it again with a click.
Answer groupsGradescope suggests groups of matching answers so you can grade a whole group at once, then review the rest.
Anonymous gradingHide student names while grading to reduce bias.
Regrade requestsStudents ask for a regrade on a specific question, and you answer it in one place instead of over email.
Statistics and taggingSee score distributions for each question, and tag questions by concept to track where students struggle.
LaTeX and MarkdownFormat equations and text in questions, rubrics, and comments.

What your students see

  • One place for their work. They open the assignment from your Blackboard course and sign in with their NetID.
  • Feedback they can follow. When you publish grades, they see their marked work with each rubric item and comment, question by question.
  • A clear way to ask questions. If you allow regrade requests, they ask about a specific question instead of emailing you.

Ready to set it up?

Setup is three syncs from your Blackboard course: your course, your roster, and your assignments. The Get Started page walks through each one with screenshots and short videos. Not using Blackboard? Go to gradescope.com/saml and choose Syracuse University.

Want help with your first one?

Bring an exam or assignment you already use, and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness will help you decide whether Gradescope fits it and how to set it up. We can:

  • Build your first assignment with you, using your own exam or problem set
  • Come to a faculty or department meeting to show how colleagues in similar courses use it
  • Point you to a webinar on the way you grade, such as bubble sheets or programming autograders

Where to go for other help: problems inside Gradescope, such as an upload or scanning error, go to Gradescope support at help@gradescope.com. Problems with Blackboard itself, such as signing in or a course not appearing, go to the ITS Service Center at help@syr.edu or 315.443.2677.
