Assignment Design Days

Is your course tagged with one or more of the Shared Competencies? Need time to (re)design an assignment that aligns with the Shared Competencies rubrics? Join us for a working session designed to help you turn a current assignment into a transparent assignment that helps students develop knowledge and skills related to Syracuse university’s university-wide learning goals.

May 26, 2026: 9:00am-noon – 400 Ostrom Ave Executive Conference Room

May 27, 2026: 9:00am-noon – Virtual Session

Apply by May 12th

Goals:

  • Actively engage in iterative teaching and learning practices.
  • (Re)Design an assignment to align with the competency outcomes.
  • Create transparent assignment prompts to communicate the connection between the competency learning outcomes, course learning objectives, and the assignment to students.

Eligibility and Award Information:

  • Any Syracuse University faculty member teaching a course tagged with one or more Shared Competencies.
  • Any Syracuse University faculty member who wishes to tag their course with one or more Shared Competencies.
  • Before the session, award recipients are also expected to:
    • Watch a short video about the Shared Competencies and the specific rubric they will be using.
    • Watch a short video about transparent assignment design.
    • Reflect on how the specific competency outcomes and indicators in the rubric align with their course.
  • At the session, award recipients will:
  • After the session, award recipients are asked to:
    • Share a copy of their pre-and-post assignments with Institutional Effectiveness.
    • Share the information learned with their home department.
  • Let us know which session you want to attend in your application. Applicants can focus on their desired competency. Up to 20 awards are available across the two sessions. 

Notification:

  • Notification of selection will be sent by May 19, 2026 
  • Selected applicants should confirm their acceptance no later than May 21, 2026
  • Faculty can choose to receive their award via payroll or research fund.
